Game of Thrones published in special edition

In honour of what has been described as “modern masterpieces of the fantasy genre” as well as one of the most popular television series to date, The Folio Society has been working closely with A Game of Thrones author, George R.R. Martin, to publish a special edition of the book series.

With plans to publish the entire A Song of Ice and Fire saga, the publishers will first release A Game of Thrones – available on July 16th, 2019.

Describing the series as “undoubtedly the great modern masterpieces of the fantasy genre,” Tom Walker, publishing director of The Folio Society, says that creating an edition to match that has been a “fabulous challenge.”

Having their expansive knowledge and support through the project was invaluable to making sure we stayed true to his vision

Illustrated by award-winning artist Jonathan Burton, the collector’s edition is bound in three-quarter blocked cloth with a printed and blocked cloth front board. Set in Vendetta with Esmeralda as display, the 824 pages are printed in black and gold throughout.

Featuring six full-page and two double-page colour illustrations per volume, the books also come with nine family trees, eight illustrated chapter openers, nine illustrated house sigils and a fold-out map inserted in case and bound in blocked cloth.

The first two-volume set features a number of extras, including a fold-out map of the Known World

Having been involved in the process at all stages, Martin says: “The Folio Society’s splendid new editions of the Song of Ice and Fire series are masterpieces of the bookmaker’s art lavishly illustrated by Jonathan Burton. Book collectors and fantasy fans alike are going to delight in these volumes, I know I will.”

“It was enormously helpful and important to work alongside George R.R Martin and his art director,” says Sheri Gee, art director at The Folio Society. “Having their expansive knowledge and support through the project was invaluable to making sure we stayed true to his vision.”
