Sustainable flexible packaging business Eco Flexibles has hit out at claims by Prime Minister Boris Johnson that recycling plastic will not solve climate change and a call to halt the production of plastic.

Eco Flexibles says halting plastic production is a “fantasy”

Johnson made the comments back in October, suggesting the recycling plastic is not the answer to environmental issues and instead suggested stopping the production of plastic.

Simon Buswell, director of Eco Flexibles, admitted that while more could be done to help recycling, stopping the production of plastic is not feasible, branding it a “fantasy”.

“It’s clear we have a significant shortage of recycling capacity today, especially in view of the accelerating demand we are likely to see in response to the incoming Plastics Tax slated for implementation in April 2022.” Buswell says.

“I can therefore understand why Mr Johnson is concerned that it’s not the answer to the country’s Net Zero targets.

“However, simply suggesting that we can switch off the use of plastic, when it is such a positive material in terms of its overall performance in packaging is simply fantasy.”
