Xerox Trivor

The newest addition to the Xerox inkjet stable is the Xerox Trivor 2400, with the high density ink package. Brian Sims explores the capabilities of this latest workhorse

We have long since accepted there are now vague boundaries between the various types of print technologies available and as to which product each can produce. The line between where web picks up and sheetfed drops off, where inkjet loses effectiveness and lithographic print takes off is not blurred, it just does not exist.

Nothing illustrates this better than the newest edition to the inkjet stable of Xerox, the Trivor2400 HD/HF inkjet press. This new reel fed inkjet printing press not only increases the speed and variations of production available to the user, but it also now spans a greater scope of printed production.

The press has similarities and shared technology of its stable partners, the Brenva and Rialto which to date covered common transaction, book and publication printing and now with the addition of the Trivor2400 HF the market can economically can expand as far out of commercial printing.

If you are a company of the size of Xerox, it is fully understandable with the scope of equipment developed, it goes without saying that you look to the other products for the components that are effective to use in any new press. It is the same here with the Trivor2400 inkjet press and elements of the Brenva and Rialto are used in the press, along with a host of new equipment that has been developed to meet the target market.

This target market is wide and depending on the ink set used, it covers everything from basic mono colour transaction product up to full colour, double sided commercial print. The press width at 511mm is the traditional lithographic mini web width of 20 inches.

The innovative part to the Trivor2400 is the fact that it is fully scalable so when the company wishes to expand or markets change, new equipment is not needed, just a much smaller investment in upscaling the press on site.

It is in the detail of the press itself: at the heart of any press is the application of the ink. In this press you can see the use of the well-proven piezoelectric print heads being deployed here. The heads themselves are in two pairs as there is the need for two-sided web printing. One pair of heads printing yellow, magenta and a second cyan and black for the first side of the web, the second pair of heads are fed by the web from the right side of the press with the same sequence of colour (YMCK).

The heads themselves have two positions being raised and lowered on motorised screw threads supported by large precision ground guide ways. The lower position puts the press in production format which can allow for the ink to be accurately deposited onto the sheet. The ink itself can be deposited in a number of ink volumes being 3, 6, 9, 11, 13 picolitres.

In addition, depending on job you can also specify a range of resolution from 300 to 1,200 DPI when required a combination of resolution called VHQ mode. This variation of ink droplet size and flexible resolution allows for a wide gamut of colour to be printed to ensure vibrancy and depth of colour particularly suited to the intended market.

In the upper position, there is more than sufficient room to allow for a set of inkjet cleaning devices to be slid under the head so the inkjets themselves can be cleaned quickly and efficiently ensuring long and accurate print quality.

Feeding the heads are two types of ink, the HD and HF variations. With the High Density (HD) ink set, Xerox claim an increase in colour gamut of between seven to nine percent and is more than capable of completing transaction and direct mail product up to volumes between 4 to 35 million impression per month (A4 leaflets).

The new High Fusion (HF) inks take the capability of the inkjet press to far higher levels and as such sit comfortably at the lower scope of commercial printing. The key part to the HF ink are they do not need primers or coating overlaid on the web prior to printing and as such it can be used on untreated 40gsm newsprint or other similar stocks.

Uninterrupted

Regardless of the inks being used, they are supplied to the press by large interchangeable containers that allow the ink to be changed on the run, ensuring production is not interrupted. With an “open time“ up to 20 minutes, these inks adapt themselves well to high production and need minimum maintenance as there is need of costly purge cycles to ensure even ink deployment.

As for the web journey through the press, there are a number of other newly designed elements of the Trivor2400 inkjet press which allow the specification scalable promises made by Xerox to be accomplished.

Once the sheet is unrolled from the reel, it passes through a festoon. There is an infeed tension unit that manages the varying web weights before the web passes through a newly designed web cleaner. Rather than using typical technology to clean the web such as air and vacuum, the Trivor2400 uses a pair of sticky rollers which can lift the smallest of particles which would affect print quality from the web. Due to the innovative design to the press, there is plenty of space around all the units making the changing of the sticky rollers simple and quick.

After being cleaned, the web passes through an electronically controlled web guide which positions the web accurately to the centre of left of the press itself prior to passing under the first pair of printheads.

After the ink is applied to side one, the sheet needs to be dried and cooled prior to printing side two. There is another new piece of equipment in the Trivor2400 which is combination infrared (IR) and hot air dryer. Neatly positioned under the first print towers, access for maintenance and webbing up is easy.

Once dried, the web passes over a set of chilled rollers which bring the web back down to operational temperature. On top of this cooling system is the intelligent scan bar which checks the first side print quality and will adjust the colour application and nozzle condition depending on what is read. All this is taking place at speeds up to 168m/min which is 2,400 full colour impressions per minute.

Due to the position of the chilling unit at the far right hand side of the press, the sheet can pass from the right-hand side of the press for the identical application of ink on the second side. The web passes through a second pair of inkjet heads, dryer, chilling unit and intelligent scan bar before exiting the press via an outfeed tension unit and turner bar to either a rewind unit or onto a number of other finishing options.

As with all new presses, there is an easy to follow graphic user interface (GUI) which is large and uncluttered making the use of this press a simple task. Added core software such as FreeFlow Core and the The Xerox IJ Print Server Powered by Fiery ensures scalability that Xerox promises on the Trivor press.
