Nominees for British Book Awards announced

The shortlist for the British Book Design and Productions Awards (BBDPA) 2021 have been announced, highlighting companies involved in the production and design industry.

The awards are a collaboration between The British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF), Oxford Brookes University, BookMachine, and The Bookseller, which all saw a record amount of 500+ entries.

The awards selection was made by a panel of industry experts from across the creative design, retail, and print sectors.

The awards come after a difficult year for the industry, which meant students and small publishers saw retail opportunities and production access severely limited.

BPIF will host the ceremony that includes 18 categories, consisting of photography, scholarly, and Children’s books.

To widen the reach of the show, the BBDPA also holds a category for aspiring students who can win £500 and a short print-based internship.

During the pandemic everyone encountered unforeseen difficulties like never before, but overall, the books market was extremely resilient

Speaking about the show, Anais Bellemans, head of marketing at the BPIF, says: “We are thankful for the massive support in the industry this year, and amazed by the beautiful entries and craftsmanship that has gone into every book.

“During the pandemic everyone encountered unforeseen difficulties like never before, but overall, the books market was extremely resilient, showing its importance to learning and bringing immersive comfort to people when needed most.”

Shortlisted books include limited editions of series like Dune, Harry Potter, and Philip K Dick’s collection of short stories. Nominees in the list were submitted by publishers such as Bonnier Books, The Folio Society, and Bloomsbury Publishing.

The full list of nominees can be found on the British Book Awards website, with the ceremony taking place on November 8th, 2021, at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London.
