UK consumers favouring paper packaging

A study by Two Sides has found that consumers prefer paper packaging to alternative substrates such as plastic.

The report, which was commissioned by Two Sides and conducted by research company, Toluna, also reveals that over the last year, the packaging industry has experienced increased volumes and revenue due to a rise in online shopping.

The spotlight has and continues to be on the negative effects of single-use plastic materials on the environment. As a result, consumers are reported to be more concerned about the environment and are demanding more sustainable packaging materials to be used.

When asked which their favourite packaging material is out of paper/cardboard, plastic, glass and metal, 10 out of 15 respondents favoured paper/cardboard materials.

The reason for this is that the materials are easier to recycle and home compostable.

According to Two Sides, in Europe, 84% of paper packaging is recycled. This makes it the most recycled packaging material in the world compared to glass which has a recycling rate of 74%, metal 80%, and plastic 42%.

The study also found that consumers feel retailers, supermarkets and brands are not doing enough to offer sustainable packaging instore.

In terms of taking responsibility ourselves, Two Sides found that 42% of consumers would avoid a company if they were not trying to reduce their use of non-recyclable packaging. A further 52% of consumers would seek out retailers which are removing plastic from their packaging.
