A nod to print in a digital era

In a time where starting your own blog to document travels or passions is easier than ever, one photography graduate has decided to embrace the medium of print instead.

Lucy Saunders has a passion for typography and graphic design and after learning how these mediums mix, Saunders’ interest in print production grew. To explore this interest, she has created her very own travel and natural living publication.

During her final year at university, Saunders created a print publication to demonstrate her understanding of physical media. Once she graduated, she continued her travels and collated her experiences through Flourish.

“At the time I had little income to take the magazine to print, but I didn’t just want to end up creating a blog, so I set my sights on a Kickstarter campaign to fund the printing costs,” Saunders explains, adding: “Physicality is a key theme for Flourish, so I wanted the product to represent those ideas in addition to the content on the pages.

“I always wanted Flourish to feel satisfying in the reader’s hands. To achieve this, I use natural uncoated papers for the inner pages and a matte laminate front cover.”

The first edition of the magazine was successfully funded and went to press in 2018. All profits went towards costs of production for the next edition in 2019.

Saunders chose Hertfordshire-based The Magazine Printing Company to complete the printing of her publication. As it is based in the UK, she is able to reduce the carbon footprint of the creation of the magazine.

Saunders is now working towards publishing the third edition of Flourish and has just launched a new Kickstarter campaign.
