A leap of faith pays off

Despite being “scared to death” of digital at first, one American label firm is now reaping the benefits of making the switch – years down the line.

Cypress Multigraphics in Illinois has been watching the digital market develop over the last decade and was an early adopter of the Mark Andy Digital Series HD production class inkjet press.

Until recently, Brad Weber, president and owner of the firm, explains that the company felt the development of digital was being treated like an afterthought. “Like a copier tucked away in the back of the pressroom that required additional production steps,” Weber adds.

Due to its “flexo upbringing”, the idea of digital print went against everything the firm knew and believed in.

Despite this, the capability of hybrid technologies including competitive digital press resolution, speed and capability led the firm to take the leap and invest in its first digital inkjet press.

Speaking candidly, digital scared our team to death at first. Making the switch was like going from water to UV-based inks in flexo

The new Mark Andy Digital Series HD production class inkjet press is allowing the firm to phase out its flexo presses and attract new work and expand into new markets.

Weber comments: “There is a lot of new work to be won and we are always hungry. Speaking candidly, digital scared our team to death at first. Making the switch was like going from water to UV-based inks in flexo.

“But it’s paid off quick and everyone is on the hybrid bandwagon and excited to have this new capability and learning experience. The way I see it, with the value Mark Andy hybrid brings to our operation, I don’t see us purchasing a conventional press again.”
