Magazine launched to celebrate new books

A new magazine has been launched which aims to take the hassle out of trawling through new book releases whilst celebrating books for people who ‘can’t get enough of them.’

With more than 200,000 books published in the UK each year, Strong Words helps readers easily find the best new titles through reviews of new releases and interviews with authors.

Former editor of FHM and Rolling Stone Ed Needham launched the publication after he realised that books were not being represented in the media like films and TV are.

...at the moment a lot of people still rely on just wandering into a bookshop and hoping they’ll find something interesting – and sometimes they do, but quite often they don’t

As a book lover himself, Needham decided he needed to create a magazine that gave books the representation in the media “that they deserve.”

Speaking to the Press Gazette, Needham says: “I wanted to produce something that enabled people to know a bit more about what’s out there, because at the moment a lot of people still rely on just wandering into a bookshop and hoping they’ll find something interesting – and sometimes they do, but quite often they don’t.”

Apart from one designer and two contributors, Needham is taking on the production of the magazine entirely by himself. The experienced editor reads all the books mentioned in each edition, writing the majority of the copy, as well as self-funding the publication.

Despite a time of supposed decline in print materials and a rise in digital outlets, Needham believes there is a big market of people willing to pick up a magazine if it is tailored to a niche subject. If this is the case, book lovers who are actively looking to spend their money on physical publications sound like the perfect market.
