Marie Claire ends print run in South Africa

After 15 years in print, the fashion title is ending its print run in South Africa.

The last issue of the women’s magazine was published in December 2018, following its initial relaunch in South Africa in 2003.

Associated Media Publishing (AMP), which also publishes Cosmopolitan and Good Housekeeping in SA, announced in October it would not be renewing its license to publish in October, stating its focus would be on transforming its existing publishing model.

“Our business has become South Africa’s most digitally- and event-led multi-media company in the lifestyle space and as the licence of the Marie Claire brand came up for renewal, we felt it was the right time for us to concentrate our efforts on our digital and creative offering,” says Julia Raphaely, CEO of AMP, which publishes the magazine in partnership with Groupe Marie Claire in France.

She adds: “We have enjoyed a long and trusted relationship with the brand and our partners in France for 15 years; the magazine has been providing readers with incredible reportage, investigative features and inspiration, and we thank them for their support, engagement and loyalty.”

Despite pulling one of its publications from print, AMP recently launched a campaign in collaboration with other industry players, called Make Time for Print. The campaign features three short videos ‘crafted to trigger an emotional response and nostalgia for print as a publishing medium.’

“We felt that consumers have been bombarded about how print and paper are bad for the environment and have forgotten the important role that printed products actually play in our lives,” explains Raphaely. “There is still an important job to be done in changing consumer perception of the print and paper category.”

According to the publisher’s website, AMP has a total readership of 1.10m across all its titles, with 979,000 making up its unduplicated readership.
