McDonald's repurposes outdated packaging

Fast food chain, McDonald’s is going ahead with outdated packaging to reduce waste after over 200 million MONOPOLY game pieces had already been printed.

Customers of McDonald’s have been left confused by competition labels with expired dates

Customers of McDonald’s have been left confused regarding the latest MONOPOLY promotion. The ‘game pieces’, which are printed tokens attached to McDonald’s packaging, have been released with expired dates.

The pieces usually display dates showing when customers can use the vouchers in order to redeem large prizes, and small instant wins. The yearly competition means customers can win prizes from £100k cash to wireless headphones, as well as food prizes like Chicken McNuggets or fruit bags.

The dates printed on the game piece labels state that customers can play from March 24th, 2021, until May 4th, 2021, causing a lot of misunderstanding with consumers looking to take part in the well-known competition.

One twitter user writes: “So I won a free Big Mac yesterday on the MONOPOLY… However, it says it expires May 18th, which was four months ago… So, can I use this or not?”

 McDonald’s has repurposed this packaging with the outdated game pieces to ensure the MONOPOLY promotion could return for customers as soon as it was safe to do so in August

In a statement, McDonald’s says: “MONOPOLY at McDonald’s was initially planned to comeback as usual in March 2021, however, was postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions and closures.

“Due to the postponement mid-production, packaging with over 200 million MONOPOLY game pieces had already been printed and dated. To reduce waste, McDonald’s has repurposed this packaging with the outdated game pieces to ensure the MONOPOLY promotion could return for customers as soon as it was safe to do so in August.”

McDonald’s new campaign dates are now August 8th, 2021, to October 5th, 2021, with a full list of the date changes on the McDonald’s website, within the competition terms and conditions. The fast food chain is encouraging customers to use the site to check for renewed dates for prize entries and redemptions.
