Mexico’s OEM sets global record with Kodak

Mexican print media company Organización Editorial Mexicana (OEM) has made history by becoming the world’s largest user of Kodak Sonora News process free plates.

OEM also runs 24 radio stations, 43 websites and a television channel

OEM is the biggest newspaper company in Latin America, publishing some 60 newspapers, and also owns a paper recycling company and operates one of the largest paperboard manufacturing plants in Mexico and an industrial corrugated paper plant.

Kodak has been working with OEM for a number of years and in 2017, the two companies signed a five-year supply deal for Sonora News Process Free Plates.

Francisco Torres Vázquez, executive vice president of OEM, pays tribute to the impact the Kodak plates have had on business at the diversified company.

“Most importantly, we’ve gained over an hour of daily print time because we have eliminated the development part of the plate making process, which in turn has reduced the costs for purchases of consumables, repairs, power, water and chemicals,” he says.

Our costs have dropped considerably as we no longer need to purchase 2,000 litres of developer and 1,000 litres of gum every month

“Our costs have dropped considerably as we no longer need to purchase 2,000 litres of developer and 1,000 litres of gum every month.

“We’ve also eliminated a potentially vulnerable point in the process concerning system faults, therefore reducing maintenance requirements and streamlining the printing process, while improving print results.

“For years, OEM has been using soy-based inks and recycled paper, and the only chemical product used in the process was the developer, so no longer using this system has made OEM's printing process environmentally friendly, while ensuring we’re as productive as possible.”
