Insulated packaging opens new doors for print

The last year has seen the print industry adapt and think outside the box to remain trading during the Covid-19 pandemic. This included printing informational posters and printed products and making use of unused equipment to contribute to the production of PPE.

New insulated packaging solution is being used to transport Covid-19 vaccines

As businesses continue to diversify, a new insulated packaging solution could provide an opportunity for print-service-providers to enter a new market within the packaging sector.

Insulation firm Recticel has begun producing insulated boxes to transport Covid-19 vaccines. Using coolants, the vacuum insulation panel boxes help maintain a temperature of 70°C for several days.

Thin panels known as vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) create a thermal environment of 0,004W/mK, which according to Recticel, allows the packages to be five times thinner than those using conventional insulation materials.

Commenting on the new technology, Chris Knowles, business manager of VIP insulation at Recticel comments: “We are seeing unprecedented challenges and requirements in the temperature-controlled packaging sector due to the global pandemic.

Another example of an insulated printed product is the food delivery company Gousto’s Eco Chill Box. The cardboard insulator took 3,200 hours of testing to produce however, it has replaced the firm’s pre-existing insulation and removed 74.5 tonnes of plastic from its boxes.
