De La Rue benefits from a custom built printing and inline inspection system for its security print products

The new sheetfed inkjet printing and inspection was developed by the two firms to automatic print production and the inline inspection of secure documents, certificates, tax stamps and authentication labels.

Ross Manufacturing, based in Cirencester, designs and develops special purpose machinery and assemblies for a number of industries. Lake Image Systems, established in Hertfordshire, specialises in creating inspection, data verification and process control solutions for the print industry.

The system is composed of a modular air vacuum transport conveyer, built by Ross Manufacturing, for transporting sheets, leaflets, labels, cards and packaging from 115x60mm up to 540x720mm in size. A high capacity feeder utilises adjustable universal suction pads that can deal with a range of substrates ranging from 30 to 230gsm.

Martin Keats, managing director at Lake Image Systems, comments: “We are once again delighted to be a part of this exciting new innovation from Ross Manufacturing. Our reputation as a print inspection technology supplier, within the security and label industry, has seen exceptional growth.

“Print inspection is now seen as an essential component in reducing production costs and waste, but more importantly, for mitigating the potential risks associated with faulty documents and labels for both the security printer and the end client.”

Using Ross’ overall system management software, the equipment can operate at speeds up to 4,000 sheets an hour. The system allows for inkjet printheads from all major print suppliers to be mounted on rails for easy inspection and continuous printing.

The print inspection system was developed by Lake Image System and is integrated onto the transport conveyor belt incorporating high resolution linescan cameras and high intensity LED white, colour or UV lighting as required, enclosed in a metal housing for safe operation.

Using Lake Image’s Discovery Multiscan software, the system can track, read and verify variable data and inspect each item for print quality defects. If an error is found, the defective piece is tracked by Multiscan’s zonal tracking module to the reject gate, where it is diverted for subsequent inspection by an operator.

“Our innovative design and modular construction have enabled us to offer a highly cost-effective and flexible transport system to meet the needs of our client,” adds Ross Baker, owner of Ross Manufacturing.

“By incorporating inkjet technologies from a variety of suppliers and Lake Image’s print inspection system, we believe we have a world-class printing solution for the growing security document and label printing market – delivering significant flexibility and productivity.”
