Speeding up the labelling process with digital

Research by Mordor Intelligence found that the print label market was valued at $37.62bn (£29.64bn) in 2018 with this figure expected to reach $47.89bn (£37.73bn) in 2024.

The print label market is expected to grow by 14% in the next five years

The steady growth of digital print technology has made a big impact on all areas of the print industry, with labelling being no different.

With print labels acting as the primary source of communication between a company and its customers, digital technology has the potential to support the industry in creating dynamic designs, fast in order to keep up with growing demand.

Ken Moir, vice president of marketing at labelling software firm, NiceLabel, has experienced first-hand the potential digitalising the label process has to reduce lead times and get products out to consumers quickly.

Moir says: “Many industries need to print labels across multiple locations and markets and find they are trying to do this using a wide variety of printers, all with different set ups.

“This can lead to inconsistent labelling, poor quality labels and potentially non-compliant labels in heavily regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals.” 

To address such issues, Moir explains that there are label management solutions which are capable of working with a variety of printers, regardless of manufacturer, and can reduce costs whilst leading to a more seamless implementation for organisations.

Moir continues: “Label management systems can automate the quality assurance process which removes the risks of errors and printing incorrect information. There is also an audit trail which shows which changes were made to which labels, by whom and where. This is essential to ensuring traceability, security and compliance in all industries.

“Traditional label printing set ups may require specialist IT knowledge to make changes to existing labels which adds both time and costs into the supply chain. Modern systems make the whole process easier, speeding up the supply chain and making the process more streamlined.”
