Students create packaging for the future

At this year’s Packaging Impact Design Award (PIDA) competition, participating students will explore what a sustainable and exciting packaging concept will look like in 2030.

The competition, which is arranged and hosted by sustainable packaging provider BillerudKorsnäs, features a brief which encourages the students to “gaze into the future and create an innovative, functional and sustainable packaging concept to solve the problem of the future.”

According to the packaging specialist’s 2017 survey, 72% of all consumers say they are willing to pay more for a product packed in a sustainable way. This has inspired the theme for the 2019 competition, which is Bring the Future – featuring the key word ‘sustainability.’

“We have to start today if we want to find tomorrow’s solutions. Change doesn’t happen overnight,” says Johanna Oderstad, technical sales carton solutions at BillerudKorsnäs. “Design for the future means to stop and think, question the way things are, identify problems and go to work to change things for the better.

This year’s theme gives the students tons of opportunities to push the envelope of their creativity

“This year’s theme gives the students tons of opportunities to push the envelope of their creativity. A theme this broad gives the students ample possibilities to go their own way. They can fantasise about future scenarios that they are able to imagine. We hope to see innovative concepts that will give us new good for thought,” adds Oderstad.

In order to select an international winner, students from across Europe will compete in separate sessions. The Swedish part of PIDA will take place on May 22nd, 2019, with German students participating in this session. PIDA France will be held on June 16th in Reims, and PIDA UK will be held in Sheffield on June 4th.

At each event, winners are selected in the following categories: highest level of sustainability; highest level of innovation; highest level of user friendliness; and the PIDA Gold Award. The international PIDA winner is then selected at the luxury packaging show, Luxe Pack, in Monaco on September 30th, 2019.
