Semaphore changes and more greeting cards

Business may seem slightly lacklustre these days, but there are always success stories as firms expand and take over existing companies.

In Leeds, Alpha Card has expanded their operation into North America and Europe demonstrating a rapid growth in the firm’s fortunes in snapping up a company in Germany.


Started in 2013, the company has produced nearly 50 million products, including z-fold cards, infinity cards and coaster cards with a 25 percent growth each year proving there’s still life in the printing industry. Earlier this year, the firm opened a division in the USA called Alpha Card Compact Media LLC. And now the outfit has a second opening this time in Germany acquiring print specialist agency, Card Media in Munich. The firm’s Lisa Ambros says: “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome the Card Media team into the Alpha Card fold. The team has been a very important part of our work in the European Market so it’s very exciting to be able to develop our partnership with them. This year has been all about growth and we’re so pleased with what we’ve achieved so far.”

Ian Whitfield and Katherine Fox founded the company and have no plans to slow down their expansion plans with acquisitions. Whitfield says: “Ultimately, the long-term success and sustainability of the business is reliant on both the impact of the product and the dedication of the team. But despite the growth in digital platforms, more and more firms are relying on printed products to increase engagement. Alpha Card boasts an excellent repeat business rate of over 70 percent and the fact that we are more impactful in creating awareness and offer a greater ROI, compared to standard printed marketing materials underpins our successful performance to date, as well as our growth aspirations for the future. For now, we look forward to building our US and German teams, developing relationships with new and existing clients and continuing to engage with people on a global scale – after all, it's what we do best."


Meanwhile in Cardiff, The Print Centre Group has acquired Semaphore Display. The firm says in a statement the deal creates ‘one of the largest print and signage companies in the city.’ In an open letter to customers the company says Semaphore has been an instrumental figure in the signage market for the last 30 years, but its owner John Marshall had decided to retire. Semaphore will continue to trade under its own name and will move to new premises in Cardiff Bay. It continues a trend of printing firms broadening their offering into wide-format and signage businesses as the industry diversifies in the face of changing market conditions.
