Are smart windows the future for new businesses?

Trying to get publicity can be an issue for small businesses, especially if they are operating from someone's front room or an attic.

Scan man: the shop in South Shields that has created a shopping wall

There is a new innovation being tried in South Shields, where an empty shop has been liveried up with the details of numerous small businesses complete with their QR codes. The idea is for passing shoppers to look in the window at all the adverts and scan the ones that take their interest. Often the business does not have a high street presence so this is one form of advertising that can bring in new business.

It is hoped the shopping wall (as it has been dubbed) will give small retailers a virtual presence to help build their business, to the point where they will be able to actually open a town centre store. The plan is for shoppers to scan the codes and be taken to the companies’ websites or online shops, giving them the opportunity to buy from them directly.

Various firms are signed up to the smart window initiative, which is a joint venture between South Tyneside Council and Wiltshire-based company City Dressing.

Smart windows can be used to promote new stores, businesses, and events, and can be installed in places where people pass by. It could well be the next growth industry. If you have a list of clients, you could put their QR codes on your front window as an add-on benefit. The potential it seems is huge.
