DTP Ltd managing director Alun Joseph has expressed how much the Fastbind PUR/EVA XT perfect binder has helped business

One of the first digital print outfits in the country, DTP specialises in short run print work and photobook production but found that, as it started expanding its services, needed a binder that could offer more flexibility.

Managing director, Alun Joseph, explains: “Before we would accept perfect bound orders, no problem, but we didn’t always have total confidence in the product to tell all of our clients that we had this service available.”

With the purchase of the compact table-top binder, which can produce both soft and hard cover bindings, with a choice of EVA or PUR hot melt cartridges depending on the job, the firm has found that it can now offer perfect binding to all its customers with confidence.

Joseph continues: “The PUR option gives us a lot more flexibility in what we can offer clients in hardback and perfect bound books and a lot more confidence when we send out one-off photobooks that need to last a lifetime.”

The PUR/EVA is built on the same chassis as the Fastbind Elite XT—DTP’s previous machine—but can work with all paper sizes up to SRA3 and books up to 45mm thick. It also uses a single-button electronic adjustable temperature control to switch between glue types, allowing easy and fluid production when changing between short runs.

Even when using the EVA glue, it is quicker and easier thanks to a sturdier build quality and much improved system for the roughing and gluing heads

“Typically each job ranges between one to 50 books,” says Joseph, who adds:  “The PUR glue comes in small pellets which we store in a vacuum sealed bag. We simply take out what we need so there is virtually no wastage. Even when using the EVA glue, it is quicker and easier thanks to a sturdier build quality and much improved system for the roughing and gluing heads. It self-adjusts for book thickness from 1 to 1,000 pages, depending on paper stock.

“The benefits that the PUR/EVA binder bring are fantastic. We are already making our clients aware of the service and providing them with perfect and hard back binding as alternatives. PUR is still a small part of our business but we expect it grow quickly and the investment to pay for itself within the first year.”
