Koehler Group has invested €5m towards a greener future for Europe

The ECBF is a dedicated fund which invests in ambitious circular and bio-based businesses in Europe.

In a bid to help towards the development of sustainable innovations and technologies, Koehler has contributed €5m (£4.26m) to the fund.

Companies such as Nestlé and Neste have also invested in the fun as well as private investors and smaller businesses.

The ECBF has a targeted fund size of €250m (£212m) as well as a target of making Europe climate-neutral by 2050. Koehler says if it reached this huge sum the ECBF would become “an important international financial instrument”.

In 2019, Koehler invested €300m (£255m) in a new manufacturing line for flexible packaging paper in a bid to replace plastic packaging in the future.

Our involvement in the ECBF will hopefully ensure that targeted funding is provided for promising technological developments

As well as investing in meeting sustainability objectives, the company is also tapping into new markets. One example of this is a plan to start manufacturing bio-based materials for the rubber industry.

Dr. Stefan Karrer, chief operating officer of Koehler, comments: “When developing innovations, we not only make use of internal expertise, but also rely on collaborations and start-ups.

“Our involvement in the ECBF will hopefully ensure that targeted funding is provided for promising technological developments.”

As well as providing financial support to companies with growth potential in the bioeconomy, the ECBF also offers workshops from investors on a range of topics.

According to Koehler, investing in the fund will also provide an opportunity to create synergies within the flexible packaging paper business arena.
