Printers Against Plastic make a pledge

A new initiative for the print industry has been launched in the form of Printers Against Plastic – an environmental scheme launched by ABC Imaging.

Printers Against Plastic encourages printers to reduce their plastic waste

The London-based firm came up with the idea after realising the sheer amount of single-use plastic used in the day-to-day operations of the business.

It has one mission – to ‘reduce the dependency of single-use plastic in printing by raising awareness, igniting through to inspire change and the sharing of information on viable alternatives.’

Supported by Canon, the initiative is currently being implemented by 10 other print companies and ABC hopes to reach many more print companies with the intention of reducing or replacing single-use plastic.

Sales director Duncan Stuart comments: “Walking around our print room, we saw the amount of one-use plastic we had on the go and thought there must be something we can do about it. Following on from our ISO 9001 accreditation, we moved up to the 14001 and then decided to turbo-charge our efforts.

“There are, according to the latest BPIF count, 8,500 print companies in the UK and if even 1,000 take part we can make a difference. In 30 years’ time, there will be more plastic in the sea than fish so even the smaller changes need to be made now. It is early days for us, but if people come on board that will be fantastic.”

Some of the changes include providing staff with metal or reusable water bottles to refill from a central fountain, introducing biodegradable plastic bags, paper and biodegradable bubble wrap, using pencils and metal pens in placement of plastic ones, and working with suppliers to reduce unnecessary plastic packaging. 

Printers Against Plastic has also garnered support from Clear Ocean Pact, Just One Ocean, Plastic Oceans, Renz and Quick Print Pro.
