New eco board could replace single-use plastic

Swanline Paper and Board has developed a new environmentally friendly display board range that could replace plastic alternatives.

Swanline says its eco board could replace plastic alternatives for POS and packaging

For use in packaging, point-of-sale (POS) products and even signage, Cygnus eco board is 100% fibre based but also resistant to moisture, making it an ideal solution for temporary outdoor signage and a range of packaging solutions.

In a worldwide bid to move away from single-use plastics, firms are looking to create sustainable and even biodegradable solutions for packaging and POS products that can resist specialist environments like supermarkets, which tend to use a considerable amount of POS that often cannot be recycled.

The board can be printed on using offset, screen and UV flatbed digital print, and can be digitally or die-cut, making it an applicable solution for almost any printer. Able to be recycled up to eight times, the board is also compostable, so at the end of its life it will biodegrade and enter the normal paperboard waste stream.

Many people assume there will be a compromise in using an environmentally friendly board; either it will be more expensive than, or not as durable as, plastic alternatives

“We are extremely excited to share this new range as it offers an environmentally friendly alternative for numerous packaging and POS applications,” says Ross Griffin, managing director at Swanline Paper and Board.

“Many people assume there will be a compromise in using an environmentally friendly board; either it will be more expensive than, or not as durable as, plastic alternatives.

“However, we have put the board through its paces and have conducted a wide range of trials over the last 12 months. We know this board can withstand extreme weather conditions and be used for a variety of applications.”

Creating boards and substrates that are environmentally friendly has been the core focus for Swanline Paper and Board as it moves to develop alternative materials to eradicate single-use plastic products from production.
