The Print Show is hot to trot

After a fantastic opening day that saw plenty of deals and activity in the hall, the second day of The Print Show 2017 has surpassed the first, in terms of both excitement and buzz. Exhibitors such as Hybrid Services and CMYUK have had serious success with the launch of the new Mimaki UCJV series.

Damien Clarke from CMYUK on stand E31, comments: “It was busy, it was really good. We sold some of the Mimaki printers that were launched yesterday. It’s been a positive start to the show. Today will be even busier.”
CMYUK has sold a number of the new UCJV series, and the firm is pleased with progress at this year’s show. If you take a walk around The Print Show, Mimaki is definitely a brand that has infiltrated all corners of the event. Hybrid Services is the UK and Ireland exclusive distributor of the Japanese manufacturer, and have also noted a positive start to the UCJV’s life in the market, since its UK launch here at The Print Show, only yesterday. 

Duncan Jefferies, of UV Creative and Hybrid Services, explains that the flatbed printer can print on anything because of the UV light technology. As paper, for example, is porous, the ink can obviously be printed easier and dry. The UV technology allows different materials that have a smooth and non-porous surfaces to be printed on, as the ink is cured by this process. 

Hybrid Services (on stand C06b) also has the UJF MkII Series on its stand, displaying the ability to literally print on anything. Jefferies tells me that this is the biggest-selling UV printer in the world. 

“It’s great for printers to think about short-runs on products,” continues Jeffries. He continued to tell me that it is perfect for those who want to create gifts in-house and move into that market. 

The way the UJK works is through the use of a Digitals Blanks tray to hold the items to be printed on in place, for example pens or notebooks (which Hybrid was using to demonstrate the capabilities of the flatbed LED UV printers). A design is created on computer software and printed directly onto the product.

Jeffries continues to tell me that people love personalised images and a product means more to them if it something they recognise. On the JFX200-2513, autumnal scenes were being printed onto an aluminium composite, and re-printed with layers of clear ink to create a raised pattern of leaves on top. While the scene is beautiful, Jeffries says if it was a picture of a woods nearby that had meaning to the buyer, they would be more inclined to purchase it. The JFX200-2513 and UJF-6042 provide the perfect opportunity for firms to do this in-house. 

It seems that not only CMYUK and Hybrid are enjoying success at this year’s edition of The Print Show, but also those firms who are experiencing their first time at this, or any, exhibition. 

Lorraine Boyt from PFW Labels (stand I02), comments: “It was a good first day [yesterday]. It’s our first Print Show and we have really enjoyed it. It’s a good step forward for us and we have definitely found it worthwhile. Time will continue to tell how worthwhile it has been.” 

The Print Show continues to be the event for the launch of new technology, and Magnum Materials decided to make the exhibition the home of the UK debut of Afinia L501 label printer.

Michael Willans from Magnum Materials explains: “It was originally launched at Labelexpo and it is a full pigment digital inkjet press. It concentrates on durability for outside and is BS5 609 approved.

Willans continues: “It has been released to go up against the Primers label printer, the Afinia is cheaper ink-wise. We have customers that use the Afinia press to create labels for products that are used by Fortnum and Mason.” 

The stand has a quirky way of displaying the new Afinia’s capabilities on stand E05a. Bottles of hot sauce are available, and you can have your own label printed with your name on it by the L501 to take home. 

Just a brief warning though, this sauce is definitely hot. We hope to see on the third and final day!
