Some things you can always rely on

With our Brexit themed feature in this issue of Print Monthly, it may come as a relief to you that there are some things you can always rely on—that is, the need for printed communications.

Sure, there have been worries for some time about digital communications making useful pieces of print such as business cards and greetings cards redundant. However, I cannot help but think there will always be a place for print.

The New York Times has suggested that print remains a relevant media for today’s youth market after reporting a positive response to a special print-only section of its publication. After designing a print-only section for children, it became so popular that it sparked an online petition to make it a regular section of the newspaper, resulting in a second edition being published in its November issue.

What is interesting about this story (page 26, Print Monthly February) is that it is young people that have been found to be enjoying print. In a time when it feels to me like we are constantly bombarded with messages that young people are technology-dependent and reading less printed books, it is good to see that this is not always the case.

This is not to say that digital communications do not have their place. After all, in the example above it was an online petition that encouraged the production of its next issue. It seems to me that the best solution is a mix of the two.
